2002 World Cup Qualifying Competition

The continents are allocated places in the finals as follows: Europe - 13 or 14 teams (plus France, holders); Africa - 5 teams; South America and Oceania - 5 teams; Asia - 2 or 3 teams (plus Japan and South Korea, hosts); Central and North America - 3 teams.

The 32 finalists have been allocated to groups as follows:

 The qualifying competition for the 2002 World Cup is complete. All the available places have been filled, and the remaining 169 of the world's nations have been eliminated. The draw for allocating the qualifying teams to groups in the finals took place on 1 December and the results are displayed above. EUROPEAN COMPETITION (13 or 14 places plus holders). The qualification competition is complete - the 15 qualifiers are: BELGIUM, CROATIA, DENMARK, ENGLAND, FRANCE, GERMANY, IRELAND, ITALY, POLAND, PORTUGAL, RUSSIA, SLOVENIA, SPAIN, SWEDEN, and TURKEY.

Competition organised by UEFA. There are nine groups - five of six teams and four of five teams. Within each group each team will play each other at home and away. The nine group winners will qualify for Korea/Japan 2002, the nine second-placed teams and the third-placed Asian qualifier will play home and away matches against each other as follows: runner-up group 6 vs runner-up group 3; runner-up group 5 vs runner-up group 9; runner-up group 7 vs runner-up group 4; runner-up group 1 vs runner-up group 8; runner-up group 2 vs third-placed Asian team (home team for first game listed first). The winner of each play-off will qualify for Korea/Japan 2002.

AFRICAN COMPETITION (5 places). Qualified: 5. Places remaining: None.

Qualifying competition complete - the five qualifiers are: CAMEROON, NIGERIA, SENEGAL, SOUTH AFRICA, TUNISIA.

SOUTH AMERICAN COMPETITION (4 or 5 places). Qualified: 5 Places remaining: 0.

The ten teams are in a single league, and each team will play each other at home and away. The top four teams will qualify for Korea/Japan 2002 automatically, and the fifth-placed team will have to play off against Australia for the final place.

Qualification complete - the qualifying teams are: ARGENTINA, BRAZIL, ECUADOR, PARAGUAY, URUGUAY.

Eliminated (5): Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela.

Competition organised by CONMEBOL

Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador and Paraguay qualify for Japan/Korea 2002. Uruguay wins play-off with Australia.

ASIA COMPETITION (4 or 5 places including hosts). Qualifying competition complete. The qualifiers are: CHINA, JAPAN , SAUDI ARABIA, SOUTH KOREA.

Competition organised by AFC. The two second-placed teams from the group final stage played each other and the winner of those matches played against Ireland for the final place.

PLAY-OFF

Iran wins play off and will play off against Ireland.

Saudi Arabia qualifies for Japan/Korea 2002, and Iran reaches the play-off.

China qualifies for Japan/Korea 2002, and UAE reaches the play-off.

OCEANIA COMPETITION (0 or 1 place). Qualified: 0. Places remaining: 0.

Competition organised by OFC.  As winner of the Oceania section of the qualifying competition, Australia must play the fifth-placed South American team at home and away (in that order) for a place at Korea/Japan 2002. The matches will take place in November 2001.

No teams have qualified.

NORTH & CENTRAL AMERICAN COMPETITION (3 places). Qualified so far: 3. Places remaining: 0.

Competition organised by CONCACAF. This is the most complicated qualifying system, but it's past the complicated stage.  The six remaining teams play each other in a single group. The top three teams in the group then qualify for Korea/Japan 2002.

The qualifying competition complete - the qualifiers are: COSTA RICA, MEXICO, USA.
