The draw for allocating the qualifying teams to groups in the finals took place on 1 December and the results are displayed above. EUROPEAN COMPETITION (13 or 14 places plus holders). The qualification competition is complete - the 15 qualifiers are: BELGIUM, CROATIA, DENMARK, ENGLAND, FRANCE, GERMANY, IRELAND, ITALY, POLAND, PORTUGAL, RUSSIA, SLOVENIA, SPAIN, SWEDEN, and TURKEY.

Competition organised by UEFA. There are nine groups - five of six teams and four of five teams. Within each group each team will play each other at home and away. The nine group winners will qualify for Korea/Japan 2002, the nine second-placed teams and the third-placed Asian qualifier will play home and away matches against each other as follows: runner-up group 6 vs runner-up group 3; runner-up group 5 vs runner-up group 9; runner-up group 7 vs runner-up group 4; runner-up group 1 vs runner-up group 8; runner-up group 2 vs third-placed Asian team (home team for first game listed first). The winner of each play-off will qualify for Korea/Japan 2002.

The ten teams are in a single league, and each team will play each other at home and away. The top four teams will qualify for Korea/Japan 2002 automatically, and the fifth-placed team will have to play off against Australia for the final place.

Qualification complete - the qualifying teams are: ARGENTINA, BRAZIL, ECUADOR, PARAGUAY, URUGUAY.

Eliminated (5): Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela.

Competition organised by AFC. The two second-placed teams from the group final stage played each other and the winner of those matches played against Ireland for the final place.

OCEANIA COMPETITION (0 or 1 place). Qualified: 0. Places remaining: 0.

Competition organised by OFC.  As winner of the Oceania section of the qualifying competition, Australia must play the fifth-placed South American team at home and away (in that order) for a place at Korea/Japan 2002. The matches will take place in November 2001.

No teams have qualified.

NORTH & CENTRAL AMERICAN COMPETITION (3 places). Qualified so far: 3. Places remaining: 0.

Competition organised by CONCACAF. This is the most complicated qualifying system, but it's past the complicated stage.  The six remaining teams play each other in a single group. The top three teams in the group then qualify for Korea/Japan 2002.
